Window insulating plastic
Window insulating plastic, also known as window insulation film or shrink film, is a type of plastic material used to improve energy efficiency and insulation in windows. It is a cost-effective solution that can be easily applied to windows to reduce heat loss and drafts during the colder months. Here’s how to use window insulating plastic:
1. Gather Materials: Purchase a window insulation kit that includes the plastic film, double-sided tape, and sometimes a hairdryer or heat gun.
2. Clean the Window: Thoroughly clean the window glass and frame to ensure a clean surface for adhesion.
3. Measure and Cut the Plastic Film: Measure the dimensions of the window and cut the plastic film from the insulation kit to fit the size of the window. Leave a few inches of overlap on each side.
4. Apply Double-Sided Tape: Attach the double-sided tape to the window frame, creating a perimeter where the plastic film will be attached. Make sure the tape is firmly adhered to the frame.
5. Attach the Plastic Film: Carefully position the plastic film over the window, aligning it with the edges of the tape. Press the film onto the tape, starting from one side and working your way across. Smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles as you go along.
6. Heat and Shrink the Film: If your kit includes a hairdryer or heat gun, use it on a low or medium heat setting to gently warm the plastic film. Move the heat source across the film, allowing it to shrink and tighten. This process helps to remove wrinkles and create a tight seal.
7. Trim Excess Film: Once the film is securely attached and shrunk, use scissors or a utility knife to trim off any excess film along the edges of the window frame.
Window insulating plastic provides an additional layer of insulation by creating an air pocket between the film and the window, reducing heat transfer and preventing drafts. It is a temporary solution that can be easily removed when not needed. Follow the instructions provided in the insulation kit for the best results.
